Endnotes

β€œIn order to write so much as a sonnet, you need a warehouse,” Annie Dillard once wrote. To write an entire book, then, might require something approaching a city block of mega warehouses.Β

The full citations for this book stretch to twenty thousand words, a length that, were it to be printed in full, would threaten to eclipse the main text itself. So I have placed most of my sup-porting evidence here for scholars and the insatiably curious.

CORRECTIONS:

Maddeningly, a couple of errors slipped into the first edition.Β

Page 4: "1,006 monarchs" should read "1,914 monarchs.Β

Pages 107, 110, and 112: The Hotlum Glacier on Mt. Shasta is misspelled in various ways, as either "Holtum" or "Hopland."Β
